Habitat
In 1995 the SONS of Lake Erie fishing
club entered into a partnership with the PA Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC),
the PA Dept. of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR) and the PA
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) what was to be the first year
of a five year plan to build and place fish habitat structures in Presque
Isle Bay waters. The project goal was to provide artificial habitat for
fish species. The structures were constructed by SONS volunteers, DCNR, and DEP workers with expertise and equipment provided by the PFBC. They were built according to designs created by the PFBC. These structures consisted of 3 types PA Porcupine Brush Cribs, PA Shallow Water Spawning Structures and PA Stake Tree Structures. The structure were placed in predetermined locations (see map). 288 of these structures were built and placed in Presque Isle Bay The project continues today with the construction of stone artificial reef in the "Stink Hole" area of Presque Isle Bay and Porcupine Cribs in the East Canal basin under the Harold Smith Fishing Pier. The SONS hope to add more structures as the opportunities arise. Click on any picture for more info |
