In early February we were contacted by
Jacob Schrift Gannon University student and president of the school's
fishing club who was planning a fishing outing for inner city children. He
was looking for both financial and physical support. The program was
intended to provide a hands on experience for this group of kids who
sometime fall into a forgotten demographics. His plan to engage the SONS of
Lake Erie as well as DCNR staff from Presque Isle State Park and Sister Pat
Lupo to partner together to make this happen. On April 9th this planning came together and 20 SONS Volunteers, DCNR Environmental Educators and Gannon Fishing Club members along with 23 inner city children gathered at the waterworks Pond area. The kids were given hands on experience and demonstrations how to catch fish as well as the safety and use of fishing gear. The weather was not great but tolerable. Some nice fish were caught including trout, bluegill, bass and crappies. one which was huge. After the program the participants were each given a brand new fishing pole which was provided by the SONS as well as a bag of fishing tackle. Scroll down to see some pictures from the day |
