First Day of Trout Season April 1, 2023 |
|||||||||||
The First Day of Trout Season was on April 1st and as we have done for over 20 years SONS of Lake Erie volunteers joined with DCNR Environmental Educator staff members at Presque Isle State Park in order to assist in providing hands on help teaching kids to fish. There were approx 30 SONS volunteers on scene handing out bait and equipment. There were about 30 young anglers participating. The program was conducted on the floating fishing platform located in the east Waterworks pond which was reserved for the kids and the handicapped on that day. The kids were accompanied in most part by their dads or other family members who added their individual fishing experience to the program. it was a perfect morning with lots of sun. Thanks to all of those who helped and especially to Environmental Educators Ray Bierbower and John Laskos who organized the event and provided the equipment. Both Waterworks Ponds on Presque Isle were lined on all sides. with fishermen. The ponds were stocked with hundreds of brown trout by PFBC and by Ray Bierbower and other Environmental Educators with trout that were raised in the Aquaponics Lab at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center.
