S.O.N.S. Take Vets Out Fishing
five years in a row the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie has provided a free fishing
trip to some of our local veterans. The event is a partnership with the
Vets Center and our local Veterans Administration Hospital. Donations from
many of our local social clubs, especially our vets clubs make our
veterans fishing trips possible.
year there were four trips, two on August 23rd on the Edward
John and two on August 30th on the Perch Pirate. Over 100- vets went on
the trips. The fishing was very slow on the 23rd but was a
little better on the 30th. Perch fishing in general was very slow this
year. You had to be right over the perch in order to be successful with
the preferred bait being emerald shiners.
asked, the veterans all raved about the great time that they had. S.O.N.S.
volunteers who were also vets went along to help. A lunch was provided by
the Vets Center. Each of the participant were given a commemorative T
September 12th a group of vets came to Liberty Pier from the
Vets Hospital. They enjoyed an extremely beautiful day and even caught a
few fish. We provide a picnic lunch for them. There were some young kids
on the pier with their parents who were invited to fish also. Watching
them fishing made me reflect that because of our brave veterans those kids
are able to live in a country where kids can grow up safe and secure. VETERANS--
